April 2013

 
It was wonderful to see all of you cheering on the Springer Stingers at Junior Olympics. We did a fabulous job representing Springer! We have STAR testing starting Monday morning (April 29th – May 9th) See schedule below. It is important for all students to be here on time and well rested.  

Colonial Day, Friday, May 10


The Fifth Grade is celebrating colonial times!  We have a fabulous fun filled day planned to reinforce what we have been studying in class.  To add to this wonderful day, we are asking students to dress, as they would have in colonial times. Some suggestions are:

Boys- knickers, white shirt or women’s blouse, white nylon knee-highs or tall socks, dark shoes, vest,tri-cornered hat

Girls- long skirt, long sleeve white blouse,dress, mob cap or bonnet, dark shoes, apron

We will also need each student to bring in a large empty soup can by May 8th.

We are going to need lots of volunteers for our big day! If you are interested please contact Donna Murphy.  Some of our stations will be candlemaking, quilting, cooking, making lanterns, games, and much much more.  So please save the day on your calendar!  Friday, May 10th from 9:00 –2:30.

5th Grade Auction Event


March 2013


Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! We had a fabulous time on Thursday with our Walk Through the Revolution.  It was a terrific experience and your children did a wonderful job.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Open House on Thursday, April 4th. Your children have worked hard all year and are excited to show you all they have done. 

Upcoming events:
1. Language Arts: We just finished reading Toliver’s Secret as well as Theme 3 RevolutionaryTimes in our Literature Reader. We will complete this theme by Spring Break. We are working on writing a short report on their favorite Revolutionary War Hero. They are to create a puppet of their hero holding one items that represents their hero.

2.  Social Studies:  We are starting Chapter 9 Life in Colonial Williamsburg. This will give them a feel for what life was like for their Revolutionary hero. We will be reacting colonial life on Colonial Day, Friday, May 10th.

3. Science In science, we are studying the Periodic table and the different elements.  We have complete the unit on Mixtures and Solutions. Next week we will begin the Living Systems unit.  We will be starting with the Heart and Circulatory System.  We will be dissecting a lamb’s heart in early June.

We had a fantastic time at the Tech Museum in San Jose.  We were able to take a class on Chemical Reactions that we were learning about. It helped to bring our science lessons to life with such great hands on activities.

Happy March! We are quite busy working hard!  We have a few upcoming events that will require costumes and memorizing of lines.

Upcoming events:
1.  Element Poster due Tuesday March 5th

      A colonial costume and lines memorized for their part

      This is our auction item, so please be sure to sign up

For Walk Through, students will be able to share costumes with the other class, however colonial day each student must have their own outfit.

1. Language Arts:  We are working on our storyboard for The Cay. We have also started our latest book, Timothy of the Cay. This is the prequel and sequel to the book, The Cay. It tells the story of how Timothy got to the cay and what after Phillip was rescued.
 
2.  Social Studies:  We finished reading chapter 7 on Comparing Colonies and will have a test on Wednesday. Look for a study guide Monday.

3. Science: Element poster due Tuesday, Mar 5th We finished the next investigation on chemical reactions, molecules, and compounds.  We will have a test on Tuesday, March 5th.

Requirements:
1.       Read a biography about a Revolutionary War hero.
2.      Read at least two (2) double paged books.
3.      Read one short book about Math.

Happy Weekend! Boy! We have been busy with our state report!
Upcoming events:
1.State Report:
We are working hard to complete our state report by this Friday, February 8th.  Please be sure to check in with your child to make sure they are on track. 
·      Begin editing in class Mon., Feb 4th   
·      Continue editing Tues., Feb 5th 
·      Rough drafts due Wednesday, Feb. 6th 
·      Final paper due Friday, February 8th
·      Speeches and posters due starting Feb 11th
·      A list of each child’s scheduled date for speeches will be posted on our class blog next week. They should be working on their posters now.  Please help your child with checking their state report calendar regularly to stay on target.
*** Please help your child edit their report on Tuesday night. It is important that they get used to doing it first before asking for help. ****

2. Language Arts:  We finished reading The Cay, a book about a two strangers—a blind boy and an older man--stranded on an island that grow to look beyond race and respect one another for who they are. We are making a storyboard for this book. Please ask your child for their view on this wonderful book.

3. Social Studies: We are studying about the first British Settlements (Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth) in the United States.  We will finish up the chapter and have a test later this week.

4. Science: Our topic right now is Mixtures and Solutions.  We are learning about separating mixtures and saturating solution.

Science-O-Rama:  We will be doing a practice science experiment as a class.  They can use this as a guide for their own project.  Those that do a science fair project will receive extra credit.  It is highly encouraged!  Science-O-Rama – March 14th

5. Valentine’s Day: 
We will be passing out valentines on 2/14 to each other.  If your child would like to bring valentines, please be sure that there is one for every child in the class.  We will be decorating collection bags in class prior to 2/14.  Bags will be provided.
